Cotopaxi, Refugio José Rivas

The second highest mountain in Ecuador is the Cotopaxi (5,897m). The Cotopaxi is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and certainly is one of the tourist hot spots in Ecuador. Many tourists try to climb the mountain. The Refugio José Rivas is situated 4,864 metres above sea level. The mountain hut is furnished spartanly and guests are entertained in the refuge. It is the departure point for numerous ascents to the peak of the mountain. Based on the steadily rising number of visitors, a mechanical clarification stage was installed in January 2014.
