At the core of our presentation was our expertise in Constructed Wetlands (CW), which are far more than a solution for wastewater treatment: they are a key to resilient, green, and livable urban spaces.

Constructed Wetlands: Sustainable Wastewater Treatment in Urban Areas

In an era where cities worldwide face growing populations and infrastructure challenges, Constructed Wetlands offer an innovative, decentralized alternative to conventional wastewater systems. Our CWs leverage natural processes, where plants and microorganisms purify wastewater without relying on complex and costly sewer networks. These systems are not only efficient but also aesthetically pleasing: well-designed CWs produce no odors and integrate harmoniously into urban landscapes. They reduce the strain on existing sewer systems and provide a cost-effective solution for cities seeking to sustainably modernize their infrastructure.

Microclimate and Urban Heat Islands: Green Oases for Cities

Our Constructed Wetlands actively contribute to improving urban microclimates (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-024-51355-0). By integrating green spaces and water surfaces into urban landscapes, including on rooftops, CWs help combat urban heat islands. The plants in our systems promote evaporative cooling, increase air humidity, and filter pollutants from the air. This creates not only cleaner water but also a more pleasant and healthier urban climate.

Opportunities in Developing Countries: Sustainability Meets Social Responsibility

Our CWs demonstrate their full potential, particularly in developing countries. The cultivation of ornamental plants in the soil filters of our systems enables natural wastewater treatment while creating economic opportunities. The sale of these products, primarily cut flowers and young plants, generates new income sources for local communities. Thus, we combine ecological innovation with social responsibility, contributing to sustainable livelihoods.

Strong Presence in Latin America: Pioneering Projects in Mexico

J&S Engineers is globally active, with a consistent presence of three engineers in Latin America (Mexico, Paraguay, Argentina). In Mexico, we are currently implementing groundbreaking projects that extend beyond wastewater treatment. Our systems integrate sludge humification and ecologically designed polishing ponds, which not only purify water but also create aesthetic and ecological value. These ponds serve as habitats for local flora and fauna, enhancing the landscape.

Commitment to the GWP Working Group “Urban Water Resilience”

Our dedication to sustainable water management goes beyond project implementation: J&S Engineers is actively involved in the newly established GWP working group “Urban Water Resilience.” Here, we contribute our expertise to develop innovative concepts for resilient urban water systems.
